Ivanov is another former KGB officer from St. Petersburg who traveled down to Moscow with Putin on Putin’s elevation to the Federal Administration in the late 1990’s. His career is often seen as running very much in parallel with Putin’s. He is only three months Putin’s junior, they both attended specialist schools followed by the Leningrad State University, the KGB higher school in Minsk and then career’s in the KGB. They first met at the state Security Department of Leningrad in the late 70’s. This long history together has resulted in close cooperation and is perhaps the reason Ivanov is rumored to be one of the front runners for the presidency in 2008.
