After graduating from the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Khristenko worked for a decade as a teacher and researcher in the Economics Department.
1990, Elected to the Chelyabinsk regional legislature.
1991-1996, served as Deputy Governor of Chelyabinsk.
1997, Elected Presidential Representative to Chelyabinsky.
1997-2000, Served as first deputy Prime Minister in the Cabinet of Stepashin.
2000-2004, Deputy Prime Minister with responsibility for energy and natural resources, telecommunications, transportation, natural monopolies, and federal/regional issues.
March 2004, Made Minister of the newly created department of energy and industry.
