Back
The Parliament of Georgia is the supreme representative (legislative) body of the country, which exercises legislative power, determines the principle directions of domestic and foreign policy, exercises control over the activity of the Government.
The Formation of the Parliament
The current formation of the Parliament is based on a majority system elections results held in November 2003 and a proportional system re-elections results held in March 2004 (the Supreme Court of Georgia cancelled the proportional system elections results held in November 2003).
Next Parliamentary elections will be held in 2008.

Currently the Parliament of Georgia consists of 235 members (deputies):
  • 150 Elected from Party List Proportional Representation System with a threshold for qualification of 7 percent.
  • 85 members elected by a Majority System (including 10 seats reserved for Deputies from the Republic of Abkhazia which continues to remain outside the control of the Central Government).
Deputies elected for a term of four years.
This was the case at the last elections to the Parliament in November 2003 and March 2004. According to constitutional amendments made in February 2005, the new Parliament shall consist of 150 members, including 100 members elected by a proportional system and 50 members elected by a majority system.
