Education: Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Beijing Language Institute.
Holds PhD in Political Sciences.
Started his career at the central office of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
1992, appointed Deputy Minister and later First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
1994, appointed Minster of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.
1999, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
1999-2002, Prime-Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
2002-2003, State Secretary and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
2003, appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
January 2007, after the resignation of Akhmetov’s Government Mr Tokaev was appointed as a Chairman of the Senate of the National Parliament of Kazakhstan.
