1986, graduated form the Almaty State Medical Institute.
After graduation worked as a laboratory assistant at Kazakhstan Scientific and Research Institute of Surgery.
1986-1989, postgraduate study and worked in the Moscow Medical Institute. Later worked at as a Senior and Head Researcher at Kazakhstan Scientific and Research Institute of Surgery.
1993, appointed Deputy Head of Foreign Economic Relations Department of the Ministry of Healthcare of Kazakhstan.
1993, appointed Director General of foreign trade company (medicaments importer) under the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations – KazMedImport.
1995, became Director General of “RR Kazakhstan – Trade and Financing Ltd” and President of “Sugar Center” Holding.
1996, appointed First Deputy Head of the Tax Police Head Department of the State Tax Committee.
Apr 1997, appointed Head of Almaty Tax Police Department.
Nov 1997, appointed Head of Tax Police Department of the Ministry of Finance of Kazakhstan.
1997, graduated from the “Adilet” Higher School of Law. Internship at FBI Academy in the United States.
Oct 1998, appointed Chairman of the Tax Police Committee and First Vice Minister of State Incomes.
Sep 1999, appointed Head of Almaty and Almaty Region Department of the National Security Committee of Kazakhstan.
2000, appointed Deputy Chairman of f the National Security Committee.
2001, First Deputy Chairman of the National Security Committee.
Nov 2001, Deputy Head of President’s Safeguard Service.
Jan 2002, appointed President of National Olympic Committee.
2002, appointed as an Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Austria and Representative of Kazakhstan to International Organizations.
July 2005, appointed First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and in Aug was also appointed as s special representative of Kazakhstan to OSCE.
Feb 2007, appointed Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria and special representative of Kazakhstan to International Originations in Vienna.
May 26, 2007, accused of kidnapping and released from office.
Rakhat Aliev is President Nursultan Nazarbaev's son-in-law, he is married to the president's eldest daughter Dariga.
Rakhat Aliev is a shareholder of Nurbank. According to local media, he is also a shareholder of one of world’s leading producer of sugar, Sucden and also, along with his wife, Dariga Nazarbaeva controls several media companies in Kazakhstan.
Aliev and another of the president's sons-in-law, Timur Kulibaev, are viewed as key contenders for the post of president after Nazarbaev steps down.
In May 2007, Kazakhstan's Internal Affairs Ministry initiated formal charges against Rakhat Aliev (accused of kidnapping the top managers of Nurbank) and several days later he was released from office (Ambassador to Austria) by President Nazarbaev. On May 28, 2007 Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs put Aliev on the international wanted list.
