Local Legislative Organs (Maslikhats)
Maslikhats are local representative (legislative) bodies, elected by the population of respective administrative and territorial units. Maslikhat Deputies currently serve a four-year term. According to constitutional amendments adopted in May 2007, newly elected Maslikhats will serve a five-year term. There is 1 Maslikhat in each of Kazakhstan’s 14 Regions, the city of Almaty and the capital of Astana.
Local Executive Organs (Akimats)
Akimats are local executive organs with limited amount of autonomy from the Central Government.
Akimats are headed by Akims (Governors) of the corresponding administrative and territorial units.
According to Constitutional amendments adopted in May 2007, Akims of Kazakhstan’s 14 Regions, the city of Almaty and the capital of Astana are appointed by the President with the consent of the respective Local legislative body (Maslikhat). The President has the right to release Akims from the office.
