The Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a bicameral legislative body. It consists of two chambers: an Upper House (Senate) and a Lower House (Majilis).
An Upper House (Senate) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan consists of 39 members (Senators). 7 Senators are appointed directly by the President for Senate’s full term of office (six years), other 32 members are elected by local government bodies (2 from each of Kazakhstan’s 14 oblasts, the capital of Astana, and the city of Almaty) and every three years half of these 32 seats are up for new candidates.
Last elections to the Senate were held in December 2005. Next elections will be held in 2011.
